Intro to Lead

Are you feeling ready for the sharp end? This is a three part series that teaches the fundamentals of Lead Climbing.

Prerequisite: Participants will need the following prerequisites to participate:

• Top Rope belay certified at Salt Pump Climbing (before the first class)

• Comfortable top rope climbing at a 5.9 grade or higher 

• 16 years of age or older

Over the course of three 2-hr sessions, all participants will learn the roles and skills of the lead climber and the lead belayer. The skills based training will provide for plenty of mock lead and mock belay practice as well as risk management for a well-rounded experience.

Session 1: Ground School & Introduction to Clipping

• Gear identification and maintence
• Multiple clipping techniques
• Mock-leading

Session 2: Introduction to Lead Belay

• Mock-Lead belay
• Mock-leading

Session 3: Putting it all together & Fall practice

• Go live with belaying and leading
• Whipper practice

Participants will be able to take the lead belay test once they've completed all three sessions. We do ask that you take your test upon your return following the end of session 3.
